Did you know? Buying plane tickets on a Tuesday isn't really cheaper
Google Flights, Expedia and Hopper data show the day you book barely matters. What counts more is the day you fly and how far ahead you book.

You've probably heard this one: "Want cheap flights? Buy on a Tuesday." Some people get even more specific and tell you to wait until Tuesday at midnight. Like you're queueing for concert tickets.
So we checked the actual data. The short answer: the day you book barely makes a difference. What matters more is the day you fly and how far ahead you book.
Where did the Tuesday myth come from?
The myth does have a real origin. According to Consumer Reports (2019), airlines used to load fares into their reservation systems in batches, and the biggest batches of discounted fares often went in on Mondays. So by the next day, Tuesday, those cheap tickets were ready to buy.
The problem is, that's an old story. Airline pricing systems now change all the time. Consumer Reports aviation adviser William J. McGee says fares change 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Airlines also run more and more flash sales that can pop up on any day.
The day you BOOK: the difference is tiny
Here's what the data says:
- Google Flights analysed US fares from August 2017 to August 2022. Tickets bought on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday were only 1.9% cheaper on average than those bought at the weekend. On a RM1,000 ticket, that's about RM19. Enough for nasi lemak and teh tarik, but not worth sleeping on until Tuesday.
- A Hopper analysis cited by Consumer Reports found Tuesday was the cheapest day to book on just 1.6% of US domestic routes.
- Hopper itself (2015) worked out that even if you book on the cheapest day, you save only about USD10 on domestic routes and USD30 on international ones on average.
The annual Expedia report, built on Airlines Reporting Corporation (ARC) data, shows the "best day to book" keeps changing. The 2024 and 2025 reports picked Sunday. The 2026 report picked Friday, with savings of only around 3%. If the "magic day" changes every year, there's no magic day.

The day you FLY: now we're talking
This is where Tuesday has a grain of truth, just for a different reason:
- The same Google Flights data found that flights departing on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday were on average 12% cheaper than weekend departures. For US domestic flights alone, the gap was around 20%.
- Expedia's 2026 report found US domestic flights were cheapest on a Tuesday, averaging 14% less than Sunday departures.
- Expedia also found Tuesday was the quietest day to fly in both its 2025 and 2026 reports. Bonus: shorter check-in queues.
But don't join "Team Tuesday" just yet. The same Expedia report found that, overall, the cheapest day to fly was Friday (up to 8% cheaper than Sunday). The 2025 report picked Thursday for international trips. So only one thing is consistent: avoid departing on a Sunday if you can.
Did you know? When people say "Tuesday is cheap", the part with evidence behind it is flying on a Tuesday, not buying on a Tuesday. Two very different things.
What matters more: when you book
Booking timing has a bigger effect than the day of the week:
- ARC (2024): for US domestic trips, book about 28 days ahead to save an average of 24%. For international, about 60 days ahead to save around 10%. Prices typically peak when you book 4 months or more in advance.
- Expedia (2026): international economy tickets booked 180 days or more ahead averaged USD813, compared with USD585 when booked 8 to 15 days out.
- Google Flights: flights with a stopover tend to be cheaper, as nonstop fares averaged 20% more.
The lesson: booking super early doesn't guarantee savings either.

One thing to keep in mind
Almost all of this data comes from the US market. Routes out of KLIA, our school holidays and festive seasons may follow different patterns. So treat it as a general guide, not a formula.
Safe, practical tips:
- Book once your plans are firm. Don't wait for a particular day.
- Compare prices for departing on a Tuesday or Wednesday versus the weekend.
- Don't book too early, and compare options with a stopover too.
- Set price alerts and watch for promo sales, because flash sales can appear on any day.
Have you ever waited for a Tuesday just to buy a ticket? Was it worth it?
